Who Should Get Massage?

If you're breathing, you could probably benefit from massage therapy. However, people with certain conditions should not get massaged. There are certain exceptions of course.

Disclaimer: If you are in doubt about any condition and the use of massage therapy, consult your physician or health care provider.

Below is a partial list of conditions that would require special consideration before a massage could be performed. This conditions are either contagious or would hinder the healing process:

abscess
multiple sclerosis
severe acne
injuries in the first 48 hours
cystic fibrosis
lupus
hernia
high blood pressure
muscular dystrophy
sunburn
warts on the hands or feet
fibromyalgia
seizure disorders
pregnancy

Below is a partial list of conditions that would prevent a trained massage therapist from providing service. The benefits provided by massage would likely worsen these conditions:

untreated high blood pressure
phlebitis
calcification of superficial arteries
congestive heart conditions
recent surgery
decubitus ulcer
contagious disease
aneurysm
nephritis
fever
thrombophlebitis
osteomyelitis
neuritis
acute inflammatory reactions
pitting edema
severe hematoma
rheumatoid arthritis
heart failure

If you are a person with any of the conditions listed above, please note the condition on the medical history form during the intake process. During the interview, you may want to ask your massage therapist about the condition and what special steps may need to be considered to provide you with the best possible massage.
